Mattie Esquibel, D'Evelyn Senior, was selected as the 2025 recipient of this $1,000 Life-Long Learner Memorial Scholarship.

Mattie wrote and submitted the following essay, which is one of the many reasons she was chosen for this scholarship:

"The term Life-Long Learner means a great deal to me since I have a number of family members and friends who have served, two of the most influential being my grandpa and brother. My grandpa was drafted into the Marines and was honorably discharged after losing his leg in the Vietnam war along with being awarded the Purple Heart. My grandpa has always been a man who has inspired me. He was a prominent figure in my life because he took the main role as a father figure in my life when my mother and father divorced. Additionally, my brother was inspired by our grandpa's stories as well because after highschool he enlisted in the Army. This scholarship is important to me and my future since I have always strived to go to college. I watched my single mother put herself through college by hard work. Any money to help pay for the high prices of an advanced education would benefit me so that I have the reality to go to college and get a degree that will benefit the future generations."
